Microneedling: Rejuvenation and Collagen Stimulation

Microneedling, although the name may be initially off-putting, as more power at its tip than ever before, and has made a long way from its beginnings. Microneedling’s performance has been taken to the next level by providing the superior skin rejuvenation and collagen formation.

This procedure helps to rejuvenate the complexion by creating tiny microchannels in the skin by way of needles that stimulate natural repair mechanisms, in return stimulating new collagen formation. While you may feel slight discomfort during the treatment, it provides dynamically dramatic results when it comes to acne scars, stretch marks, lines and wrinkles and improving your skin’s overall texture and skin resiliency by increasing collagen production.

Another tremendous benefit of microneedling is its ability to allow other skin-building ingredients to more effectively penetrate the skin, where they can affect the skin at a deeper cellular level. These properties may make microneedling an excellent treatment for addressing the concerns of aging and hyperpigmented skin. Ensure the best results by combining this treatment with an at-home regimen of growth factors, antioxidants, peptides, and hyaluronic acid for more even dramatic results. We highly recommend these few additions to your home care regimen:

Your skin at 40+

This is 40. Now that your skin has settled from the “transitional phase” of aging to the early “physical effects” of aging, changes to the tone and texture of your skin, which are inclusive of the result of years intrinsic and extrinsic factors, are starting to emerge. Dulling of the skin starts to set in and that healthy glow that is reminiscent of our teenage years is lost, partially because of decreased collagen and elastin that gets broken down by the natural aging process and due to outside elements.

A Dull Complexion

Why It’s Happening
As we age, the normal desquamation of our skin cells slows down, and our skin cells don’t shed as quickly in our 40s as they did when we were younger. This results in a build up of dead skin that sit on the surface, making skin look dull. Combine the lackluster cluster of dead skin cells with sun damage and the result is do-nothing skin.

Fix It
Since our skin’s ability to shed its own skin cells rapidly decreases as we age, regular exfoliation is a must. A gentle scrub a few times a week or a non-irritating retinol should be used regularly.

A series of LED and fractional resurfacing treatments can be done to stimulate collagen and restore skin’s healthy glow. Not only do they make skin look smoother and more even, but they also make fine lines and large pores less noticeable.

A Daily Dose of Retinol

Why A Retinoid Is A Must
No matter your age, using a retinoid or retinol cream nightly can make a world of difference in how your skin ages. Despite the current condition of your skin, be it seemingly perfect or extensively damaged, every 40-something woman should be using a retinoid. There is no other ingredient with the level of data that shows, over the years, your skin is going to more refined and age rather well. Retinoids help exfoliate skin and help regulate and even out pigmentation because as they resurface the skin. Additionally, retinoids are great for adult acne because they regulate oil and increase cell turnover to flush out the pores and reduce impactions that can lead to breakouts.

Age Spots

Why They’re Happening
The skin can’t repair itself nearly as well, or as fast, as it once did. Hyperpigmentation will start to surface, due to past sun exposure and trauma to the skin.
Fix Them With
Retin-A and antioxidants can help, but light and laser treatments like fractional CO2 can reduce the appearance of sun damage, and create a more even tone and smoother skin texture.

When spots are deeper and darker in color, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) works well because it destroys discoloration without causing any damage to skin.

The Start of Volume Loss
In your early 40s (and sometimes even in your 30s), the adipose layer may start to diminish from the cheeks, lips and under the eyes, which gives the face a tired or sunken look. As we age, the face loses the fullness that we associate with a youthful look. With the use of a hyaluronic acid filler, these areas can be reinflated, to how they looked years ago, helping you combat the effects of volume loss.

To address these concerns and to ward off the signs of aging, contact skiin anti-aging lounge at 262-657-5446. We have a plethora of services, procedures, and products to help you in the battle against the aging process.

Let’s talk Labiaplasty

There are certain anatomical landmarks that characterize normal genitalia, but there is no definition of what a normal appearance is. The vulva can come in a variety of colors or hair patterns and labia of different sizes. Women can be unhappy with the size and/or appearance of their labia, or vaginal lips – from chubby labia majora to a prominent clitoral hood to a large vaginal opening — all of which are typical variances – that may be due to genetics, child birth, or hormonal changes. This can lead to insecurity, embarrassment with a sexual partner, discomfort in tight pants, underwear or swim wear. Large labia can also cause hygienic problems. Labia reduction, vaginal rejuvenation, or labiaplasty is a common cosmetic procedure to change the appearance to decrease the size and achieve more aesthetically pleasing labia.

The most frequent concern is that the labia minora are too long, which often leads to the most common of vaginal plastic surgeries: the labiaplasty. In terms of size of the labia minora, there’s a wide range in what’s normal. But, what’s average is four centimeters or less from base to tip. And, just as a lot of women have one breast that’s bigger than the other, there will often be one labia that’s a little longer.

There are many reasons for considering Labia Reduction or Vaginal Rejuvination, including but not limited to:

Large labia that protrude from the body
Labia with a darker color that can look more aged
Asymmetrical labia
Labia that can cause discomfort wearing tight underwear or clothing.
General Procedure

There are many variations to labia reduction or labiaplasty. Generally, the excess labia are excised and dissolvable stiches are used to create smaller, more youthful appearing labia. This procedure can be done under local anesthesia or general anesthesia based on a patient’s desires. Dr. Colque treats every patient individually based on their unique goals. The procedure for a labiaplasty takes, on average, 1 hour.

Practice Safe Sun: The FYI on SPF

Have you made the acquaintance of SPF for year-round protection?

Well, let us introduce you…..

What is SPF?

The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) displayed on sunscreen labels ranges anywhere from as low as 2 to as high as 100 and refers to the product’s ability to screen or block out the sun’s harmful rays.

Here’s how it works: If it takes 20 minutes for your unprotected skin to start turning red, using an SPF 15 sunscreen theoretically prevents reddening 15 times longer – about five hours. Consumers need to be aware that SPF protection does not increase proportionally with an increased SPF number. While an SPF of 2 will block 50% of ultraviolet radiation, an SPF of 15 blocks 93% and an SPF of 30 block 95%.

Make SPF Your BFF

The Foundation of Healthy Skin

  • Dermatologists strongly recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF 15 – SPF 30 year-round for all skin types.
  • The sun’s rays know no bounds – SPF is imperative every day of every season. If you’re shades and blinds are open, you’re exposed to the sun’s harmful rays. Daytime activities of driving, running errands, walking the dog, etc… expose you to the sun. Even the cloudiest days aren’t enough to protect you from the sun. Apply SPF daily to every area that is exposed.
  • Apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to sun exposure so it can effectively protect you against the sun’s harmful rays.
  • Make sure to protect more than your face! Apply to your ears, neck, decollete, hands – any and every area that is exposed to the sun.
  • Always apply before your makeup and after your moisturizer.
  • Generally speaking, if you are in the sun for a prolonged (more than 20 minutes) amount of time, re-apply your SPF every hour to ensure maximum protection.
  • Waterproof? Not really…. SPF can only withstand so much perspiration, clhorine, fresh water and salt water, so reapply these types of sunscreens every hour as well.
  • Be sure to cover often-missed spots: lips, ears, around eyes, neck, scalp if hair is thinning, hands, and feet.
  • Choose a PABA free broad-spectrum (providing proportional protection against UVA and UVB rays) sunscreen.

The SPF Alphabet

UVA, UVB, and the ABCDEs

  • UVA (Aging Rays – those rays that penetrate deeper into the skin and are the culprits in premature aging and wrinkling of the skin) and UVB (Burning Rays – the chief cause of skin reddening and sunburn, tends to damage the skin’s more superficial epidermal layers.) are both equally harmful to the skin.
  • By damaging the skin’s cellular DNA, excessive UV radiation produces genetic mutations that can lead to skin cancer.
  • Many experts believe that, especially for fair-skinned people, UV radiation also frequently plays a key role in melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, which kills more than 8,000 Americans each year.
  • Tanning beds expose you to 100x more UVA rays than the sun.
  • Your risk of melanoma increases by 75% when you use tanning beds before the age of 35.
  • Last year, the International Agency for Research on Cancer shifted indoor tanning devices to the highest cancer risk category: “carcinogenic to humans.” They were formerly classified as “probably carcinogenic to humans.”
  • Tanning can be addictive. For some people, UV radiation can have a druglike effect; they feel dependent on it and can experience withdrawal symptoms.
  • Not only are tanning-bed users more vulnerable to melanoma, they’re also 2½ times more likely to be diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma and 1½ times more susceptible to basal cell carcinoma.
  • Look for the ABCDEs of melanoma, and if you see one or more, make an appointment with a physician immediately.

Asymmetric:  If you draw a line through this mole, the two halves will not match.

Border:  The borders of an early melanoma tend to be uneven. The edges may be scalloped or notched.

Color:  Having a variety of colors is another warning signal. A number of different shades of brown, tan or black could appear. A melanoma may also become red, blue or some other color.

Diameter:  Melanomas usually are larger in diameter than the size of the eraser on your pencil (1/4 inch or 6 mm), but they may sometimes be smaller when first detected.

Evolving:  Any change – in size, shape, color, elevation, or another trait, or any new symptom such as bleeding, itching or crusting – points to danger.

Radiant, healthy skin can be yours by employing these practices into your daily regimen. We think this is the beginning pf beautiful friendship.

Erase the Beauty Sins of Summer

It was a wonderful summer. You swam in lakes and seas, ran through fields, finished books, and felt the sun on your face in far-flung destinations. The sillage of sunscreen, salt, and sand is still heavy on your beach bags and eyelet sundresses. But no matter how low-key or carefree your vacation behavior, your sudden intimacy with the sun has most likely resulted in a state of epidermal disarray. But all it takes to remedy your summer sins-when it comes to your skin at least-are a few easy steps and standby products.
Returning to complexion perfection could be as simple as returning to a purposeful skin care regimen. Reintroduce or get acquainted with radiance-boosting cleansers (we LOVE Revision’s Papaya Enzyme Cleanser), scrubs (get glowing with Revision’s Finishing Touch),  and treatment products (mybody’s A-TEAM is a dream)  to put you on the path to porelessness. For additional cleanup, a glowing, smooth surface can be found at the hands of an at-home peel (myboy’s new GLOWBIOTICS provides instant resurfacing) performed three times per week.
It’s no secret that prolonged UV exposure from lazy days on the sand can lead to fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots. For this, too, we suggest first tackling the problem at home before bed with brightening formulas. mybody’s BRIGHTAMIN C  Give your skin the radiant glow you desire with quality skincare you deserve. Radical lipid-based Vitamin C works more effectively than traditional Vitamin C products to brighten, lift and tighten while imparting antioxidant protection; mybody’s myHERO is a powerful multi-vitamin for your skin, this vital anti-aging multi-tasker combines plant-based growth factor peptides, key antioxidants, retinol boosters, a unique DNA repair complex with instant skin tighteners and brighteners; Revision’sRetinol Complete contains encapsulated Retinol for maximum efficacy and minimal irritation, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and brightens and evens skin tone. For more stubborn dark spots, skin may require an in-office boost to jump-start their line-smoothing and complexion-evening results. Tone and texture can be corrected through a series ofmicrodermabrasion treatments to improve skin texture and tone while decreasing surface pigmentation; intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy sessions to clear skin of sun spots, irregular pigmentation, small capillaries, general redness and is also effective in reducing pore size. IPL can treat face, neck, chest, arms, legs and hands. Recommended as a series for best results.Fall is looking brighter still!

Botox for Skin Rejuvenation?

It’s been all over the internet, magazines, and in the news. If you haven’t heard yet, Botox injections may do more than paralyze muscles to promote wrinkle reduction. New research suggests the paralysis-inducing treatments may also turn back the clock on skin as a whole, by increasing its natural ability to stretch and recoil.

Botox treatments seem to promote production of elastin and collagen, the dynamic duo of proteins that make younger skin tight, firm and flexible.

“We found if we treat people with Botox using standard techniques, we see an increase in elasticity, which is what you’d see in people with more youthful skin,” Dr. James Bonaparte, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa in Canada, stated. “We’re actually seeing evidence that we, for some reason, are getting more elastin and collagen in the skin,” Bonaparte said.

As people age, repeated facial expressions cause fine lines, deep lines, and wrinkles of the face. Additionally, the levels of elastin and collagen decline in the skin, causing it to sag. Sun exposure and lifestyle lead to excessive aging as well, as sun exposure accounts for 80% of skin’s aging.

Botox is made from the same bacterial toxin that causes botulism – onabotulinum toxin A – and is used to paralyze facial muscles to smooth the skin’s surface.

However, some experts have noted that areas of skin that have been treated with Botox appeared to regain some elasticity and pliability – an effect not fully explainable by merely paralyzing muscles.

To examine this more closely, Bonaparte and his colleagues gave 48 women, average age 55, their first-ever Botox injections, treating the skin between the eyebrows and around the eyes. The following four months, the team followed the women to see how the injections affected the skin’s elasticity.

Their findings show that Botox increased the elasticity of the women’s faces, causing changes in composition that make the skin more youthful in appearance. The researchers found this effect to be similar to the results of radiofrequency skin tightening, an aesthetic procedure that uses radio waves to heat skin tissue and stimulate collagen production.

The effects last roughly as long as round of Botox injections do – about three to four months.

“It’s temporary, but it’s not a byproduct of swelling, and it’s not a byproduct of muscle contraction. It’s something that’s intrinsic to the skin itself,” said Dr. Catherine Winslow, an Indianapolis plastic surgeon who wrote an editorial accompanying the new study.

There isn’t a concrete understanding or reason why Botox has this effect on skin’s collagen and elastin. It is believed that the cells that produce elastin and collagen may contain a receptor that somehow responds positively to Botox. If this proves to be true, future drugs could be created to target that receptor with even better results than those produced by Botox.

“We may be able to develop some medications that don’t require injection, that you can apply topically and get the same skin rejuvenation effect as Botox,” Bonaparte said.

Additionally, Winslow believes that Botox might promote and antioxidant effect on the skin. Muscles of the face produce waste products as they are engaged and are believed by Winslow to damage the collagen and elastin. By paralyzing these muscles, she suspects Botox gives the skin a chance to heal itself from this damage, and ward off future damage from accumulating.

Dr. Scot Glasberg, a New York City plastic surgeon and president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, thinks that the answer may be even simpler: The paralysis caused by Botox gives the collagen and elastin fibers a chance to recover from repetitive facial motion.

The research team will move forward in their investigation, determining whether extended use of Botox can have long-term benefits for the face or not. Prior studies have shown consistent use of Botox may prolong the treatment’s efficacy, reducing the amount of doses over time and increasing the length of time between treatments.

Hair Removal the Permanent Way

De-fuzzing our bodies and faces has come a long way since generations past. While for our mothers, their mothers, and their mothers, good old fashioned shaving was the only option. Today the ways in which to get rid of unwanted hair on our bodies and face are plentiful. From slathering on depilatory creams, sugaring and waxing to threading, tweezing and lasering our hair off, the “one size fits all” approach does not apply to getting rid of hair. One option may be preferred by or work better for one than it does for another.

If you need a quick fix for the weekend, date night, or an impromptu body-baring event, you have plenty of options. Yet, if you are looking for a permanent way to say “By Bye!” to body hair, laser hair removal is your best and only option.

Laser hair removal gained momentum as a leader in the hair removal realm in the early 2000s. In the past 15 years, technology has come a long way and the process and results are better than ever.

laser hair removal

Still weary? Let us take away the guesswork – here is what you can expect if you are interested in this treatment:

Not all lasers suit all skin and hair types. The truth is that no one laser can successfully remove all hair from every woman but we can achieve great results on all skin types with our state of the art equipment, Asclepion. This state of the art equipment provides effective results in less time with less discomfort and less sessions.

It may take anywhere between 4-8 treatments to remove hair completely, depending on the amount of and texture of the hair.

When booking your treatments, the time between visits need to be apart by about a month, depending on your hair.

It can be sensitizing to the skin. Many people compare it to having a rubber band snapped across your skin but the level of discomfort is greatly minimized with the laser technology we use.

The price varies. Just like there is not a “one size fits all” with hair removal options, there isn’t one for laser hair removal treatments.

There is no downtime. You might experience some redness or or slight inflammation after the treatment session, but it vanishes shortly after the treatment.

It works! After the first few treatments there should be a 50 to 70 percent reduction in hair. Some people need to do yearly touch-ups to stay free of unwanted hair, but any hair that does grow back will be much finer and thinner.

Combination Anti-Aging Therapy

The aging process varies from one person to the next.  The main causes in facial aging are changes in bone density, loss or displacement of fatty tissue and the breakdown of collagen and elastin. These causes can be related to intrinsic factors including hormones and heredity and extrinsic factors like free radical damage brought on by sun exposure, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoke and poor diet.

Can we turn back time?

Minimally invasive facial cosmetic treatments and surgical procedures coupled with superior skincare products, regularly scheduled anti-aging facial treatments, and healthy lifestyle habits can be your key to reducing the signs of aging. While some factors, like bone changes, can’t be prevented, others like fat, collagen and elastin loss can be minimized. Lifestyle choices like diet, exercise, and reduced sun exposure can quickly impact how these factors come into play.

Today, doctors have a better understanding of what causes facial aging and are better equipped to address areas that aging tend to creep up. The nasolabial folds, deep facial lines and wrinkles, and volume loss in the cheek area are the areas that tend to tell a person’s age. These areas are able to be effectively treated with and to provide better results using injectable solutions like Botox or Dysport, hyaluronic acid fillers, collagen-based stimulators and fillers, and even naturally injected fat.

The injectable revolution is the catalyst to the increase in noninvasive cosmetic treatments. The advancements in the use of injectables have come a long way in preventing and reversing the visible signs of aging and the indications for certain injectables are growing. Everybody can benefit from an injectable at some point in time – to stave off aging and promote a more youthful appearance.

Fillers can offer instant results, which is a major draw for many people. Botox takes 5-7 days te see and feel the full result. Many patients don’t want or can’t afford the downtime and overall cost that comes along with surgery.

Today’s injectable menu offers a wide array of products to address not only the wrinkles themselves, but the muscles that cause lines and furrows to form. Dermal fillers,  such as Radiesse and Juvederm, plump up wrinkles while muscle blocking agents, such as Botox and Dysport, prevent the muscle contractions that lead to etched lines.

This “mix-and-match” approach is gaining popularity, and studies have shown doing these in conjunction can lead to longer-lasting results, since impairing the muscle function around the areas treated with fillers can slow the re-absorption of the product. No downtime and phenomenal results. What are you waiting for?

Now let’s schedule your appointment: 262-657-5446.

Say “YES!” to thinner thighs

Who doesn’t want thinner thighs?. While many women tend to gain weight around their midsection, others store stubborn fat in their thighs and buttocks. But with these two tips, you will learn how to achieve the long, lean legs you’ve always longed for.

1. Slim and Tone With Squats and Lunges

Who it’s good for: Everyone and all body types
Before you jump the gun and decide that the only way to get a better body is with surgery, give a good workout a shot— and stick with it. The best methods for taking extra pounds off of the thighs, and firming them, too, is by combining aerobic exercise, like hiking and running, with toning moves, such as squats and lunges with leg lifts. Aerobic exercises help to shed that top layer of fat, and the toning moves help to firm up the underlying muscles. You can also add resistance with medicine balls or Kettlebells, which will up the intensity of your workout, therefore burning more calories.

Be patient. Working out can garner pretty dramatic results, but they won’t happen overnight. You need to be consistent with cardio, toning and diet for about 12 weeks to really see the increase in lean body tissue and a decrease in fatty tissue. You’ll also want to make sure that you eat well, too, including plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and proteins—and only healthy fats like avocado, nuts and olive oil—since fats and carbs love to stick to the inner and outer thighs.

2. Get Rid of Fat with Coolsculpting

Who it’s good for: Those with hard-to-banish pockets of fat on the inner and/or outer thighs.

No matter how hard we try, there are some of us who have areas on the thighs that are resistant to dieting and exercise and just won’t improve. That’s where Coolsculpting comes in. Both the inner and outer thigh can be treated by the Coolsculpting procedure. CoolSculpting technology safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), then die. Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted you. The CoolSculpting fat freezing procedure is FDA-cleared and contours the body by safely and effectively freezing away unwanted fat for good without surgery or downtime.

Whether the inner thighs, outer thighs or both are your areas of concern, your plastic surgeon can sculpt a sleeker look with Coolsculpting and its array options to target certain areas of concern. It’s the safe and effective alternative to fat reduction surgeries.

Have questions about Coolsculpting or want to book your complimentary consultation? Contact us today at 2562-657-5446! We look forward to helping you on your journey to a more sculpted, healthier you.
